Description
The slippery elm bark (-short SEB) is recommended among cat friends since long ago in relation to the increased well-being and health, but now it is used even among horse and dog owners since the impression spreaded that the bark of the American slippery elm contains polysaccharides which form an effective mucous in conjunction with moisture.
This mucus supports the synovial fluid, binds waste products in all areas of the body (intestines, etc.) and helps to eliminate them, so slippery elm bark can also be ideal for etoxification of the body of cats, dogs and horses.
Studies even proof that slippery elm bark contains antioxidants that are closely related to the cell protection and the formation of new cells, prevent cancer and also can have a positive impact on the kidneys.
Slippery elm bark also is
- highly nutritious and supports cats, dogs and horses with specific nutrients
- soothing and calming and has positive effect on the gastric and intestinal mucosa and against gastritis
- has an astringent effect on the mucous membranes, inhibits the excessive secretion of digestive glands and supports the healing of wounds by stimulus mitigation and sealing protein precipitation
- slime-forming and protects the mucous membranes in the gastrointestinal area, and in the respiratory tract
Slippery elm bark is indicated for
- Relief, anti-inflammation and ulcers in the mouth and healing problems at tooth and gum
- as rapid assistance with hyperacidity, diarrhea, constipation, gastritis, colic, coughs, bronchitis etc.
- Relief of dry, scaly skin
- Moreover, you can apply slippery elm bark at intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
dosage
For internal use
- 30g slippery elm bark cut for horses
once daily or twice mixed with feed. However, it should be noted that slippery elm bark may impair the absorption of nutrients - so far, the powder should not be coadministered with drugs or mineral feed ration.
With stomach problems (Gastitis, gastric ulcer) slippery elm bark can be commingled with water and given in a disposable syringe (without the needle!), and fed to the horse into the mouth half an hour before feeding - the mucus out of the slippery elm bark puts a stimulus mitigating and soothing protective layer before the stomach lining and prevents the acidosis.
For external use and for internal use for dogs and cats, we recommend grinding the slippery elm bark.
- Cats about 1/3 teaspoon (0.3 g) per 5 kg body weight
- Dogs 0.4g per kilo dog / equivalent:
- 6 g for a dog of 15 kg body weight
- 12 g for a dog of 30 kg body weight
- 18 g for a dog of 45 kg body weight
once daily or three times mixed with a little water or stirred into some food (here it should be noted that slippery elm bark may impair the absorption of nutrients? insofar as the powder should not be given on the main feedlot).
With stomach problems (nausea, vomiting) slippery elm bark can be commingled with water and given in a disposable syringe (without the needle!), and fed to the cat into the mouth half an hour before feeding - the mucus out of the slippery elm bark puts a stimulus mitigating and soothing protective layer before the stomach lining and prevents the acidosis.
syrup
Among cat and dog owners a widespread possibility for
application of slippery elm bark is the production of syrup: For
this purpose, 1-3 teaspoons of elm bark powder are stirred into
a cup of cold water and then stirred while constantly brought to
the boil in a saucepan (do not use aluminum). After briefly
boiling, the heat can be reduced, but the stirring is to be
continued until the liquid thickens. Then allow to cool and when
the syrup is not used immediately, refrigerate (where it is best
before 5 days).
Dosierung
- Cats ¼ to ½ teaspoon up to 4 times daily
- Dogs (depending on size) ¾ to 2 teaspoons / 4 x daily
When using slippery elm bark no side effects are known. In this respect, the powder may be administered for acute illnesses and to alleviate the symptoms even several times a day (up to six).
Observe for the internal use of slippery elm bark, that the absorption of e.g. drug effects can be prevented. That is why it is recommended to take at least half an hour interval between repeated administration of slippery elm bark and drugs.
For external use the slippery elm bark powder can be mixed with water or a dollop of coconut oil and put on wounds or eczema. The slippery elm bark is a natural antiseptic which protects the wound.
